Within the last two years, the ethylene market has gone through volatile fluctuations, forcing some producers to shutter or mothball ethylene production units or even dismantle units entirely. A large number of unit maintenance turnarounds planned in the coming two years has the potential of tightening supply enough to help producers realize increased margins and profits. New capacity planned to come online over the next four years is aimed at replacing several units that are closing along the Texas Gulf Coast as part of new NOx (nitrogen oxide) emission reductions.
IIR’s Ethylene Database is designed to track unit turnaround schedules within the nearly 60 operational ethylene units located in the U.S. and Canada. This database identifies spending opportunities for the equipment and service companies by tracking the planned turnarounds using IIR’s direct market research approach.
When maintenance turnarounds occur in this industry, the spending is significant mainly because most major ethylene plants commonly do not schedule turnarounds but once every few years. As a result, a large amount of maintenance and project activity generally takes place. The potential of many projects being executed at once is great. This makes it critical for equipment and service companies to stay on top of the planned activity and establish better relationships, including pre-qualification as preferred vendors, at the plant and project level in order to quickly respond to the plant’s need on a short and long-term basis.
Worldwide, IIR has been tracking the ethylene capital and maintenance projects for many years. The Ethylene Turnaround Tracking database, complete with plant and unit contacts, unit details, design capacity, turnaround kick-off date and duration, is designed to provide the user with the necessary market intelligence to pursue qualified opportunities in the industry.
