Japan's Nuclear Fleet Down to One, but Oita Nuclear Power Station Units Set to Restart
SUGAR LAND--April 9, 2012--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In the year following the Great East Japan Earthquake, 53 of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors have been shut down, because of both yearly maintenance and damage sustained from the earthquake itself. At present, the only reactor that is still operational is Tomari nuclear power station's Unit 3, owned and operated by Hokkaido Electric Power Company Incorporated (TYO:9509) (Hokuden) (Sapporo, Japan) . This situation has increased Japan's dependence on fossil fuels, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil, which has made for a more tenuous financial situation for Japanese power companies.
