Outside North America, IIR covers Power, LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) & GTL (Gas to Liquids), Petroleum Refining, Chemical Processing, and Metals & Minerals. In 2003, IIR reported on 1,457 international projects worth a total of $351.66 billion. International project coverage includes major Grassroot plants and In-Plant Capital project expenditures worth at least $25 million. More than 80% of the international project activity reported last year by IIR was found in the international regions of Asia, Europe, and South America.

IIR estimates that outside the U.S. & Canada, there are 78 countries that will spend $16.5 trillion on industrial expansion during the next 5 years (2004-2008). The five industries covered by IIR (Power, LNG & GTL, Refining, Chemical Processing and Metals & Minerals) are expected to make up 74% of the estimated $16.2 trillion. The $16.2 Trillion (41.5%) is earmarked for natural resources and industrial capital development.
Those countries expected to invest in industrial expansion include the 18 Big Emerging Market (BEM) countries, that are spending the most on industrial Grassroot plant construction and the 60 mature countries that include more In-Plant Capital expenditures to expand manufacturing capacity and output.
