South Africa's Transnet Orders 1,064 Locomotives from China, GE and Bombardier
JOHANNESBURG--March 19, 2014--Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pursuing the strategic goal of shifting more freight from the road system, South Africa's state-owned rail utility Transnet launched a $28 billion, seven-year plan in 2012 to modernize and expand rail networks, ports and pipelines under its control. The target is to raise general freight business volumes to an annual 170 million tons, from the current 82.6 million tons, by 2019.
