CEZ to Shut Bulgarian Coal-Fired Plant

GALWAY, IRELAND--November 6, 2014 --Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) Czech energy utility CEZ Group (PRG:BAACEZ) (Prague, Czech Republic) is set to shut its Bulgarian coal-fired plant at Varna due to the high cost of operations and strict emissions controls.

The 1260-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant located by the Black Sea, was the subject of plans for modernisation but attempts to form a joint company with Bulgaria's state-owned Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) to upgrade the facility have failed. CEZ has confirmed that it will begin shuttering the plant from January 1 next year until March or April.
