Market Trends

Industry Overview
Capital and Maintenance project spending is poised to recover after an economic downturn and lower demand for electricity caused a reduction in spending during 2009. In terms of new build activity the construction of renewable energy and natural gas-fired facilities are expected to lead the way. Meanwhile in-plant capital spending at operational power plants is poised to recover.

Business Trends
Power producers continue to strategize to develop ways to meet expected demand in the most competitive, efficient and environmentally friendly manner possible. Not only will new generation be needed to meet demand, but it will also be needed to replace aging generation assets.

Market & Economic Trends
A sluggish economy has led to two consecutive years of decline in demand for electricity capacity. However, as the economy recovers we are nearing an age where new generation will be needed to meet growing demand, as well as to replace older less efficient power plants.

Environmental Trends
Over the past two years, construction starts for environmental compliance spending has been on the decline. This has been a result of the United States EPA and state government agencies going back to the drawing board to develop the next round of environmental updates. There is also uncertainty over the magnitude of potential CO2 legislation. This segment of the industry is poised to experience future growth.

Trends by Power Plant Fuel Type
With development of new coal-fired generation stalled, the door is open for the potential construction of new natural gas-fired generation to meet future demand for electricity. For the immediate future development of new renewable energy sources continues to remain strong. In addition to new build activity, power producers are looking for ways to modernize and extend the life of an aging fleet.

Latin America Overview
The power industry in Latin America has been slowed by the global economic downturn. However increasing demand is opening the door for increased project spending.

Europe Overview
The power industry in Europe experienced a challenging year due to the global recession. However the region remains primed for significant recovery in project spending as demand is expected to bounce in 2010 back with economic recovery. This is creating vast opportunities for development of new generation resources, especially renewable, as well as in-plant capital spending directed to modernization programs.
