About the Industry
The fight for the North American automotive market share has become increasingly intense over the last decade. The foreign automakers have made great inroads into a market that, for years, was dominated by the Big 3 (GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler). Today, the Big 3 really doesn’t exist any longer; the Big 5 has replaced it, as the foreign automakers nudge DiamlerChrysler out of the number 3 spot. In addition in the US, while the traditional northern automobile strongholds are still in place in many respects, now the southern/southeastern states have made a tremendous push for their piece of the automobile industry pie.
Northern automakers will continue to modernize and upgrade their plants to keep pace with the changing atmosphere of the industry; while the southern automakers are constructing new assembly plants with massive expansions. Tier suppliers are expanding their facilities all across North America to accommodate the automakers. No matter how you slice it, billions of dollars are at play in the automotive industry.
