Developing Solutions for Power Plant Emission Reductions by Utilizing Waste Products, by S&S Lime Incorporated
Established almost 14 years ago, S&S Lime has collected and supplied waste lime products to industries across the country for soil stabilization and other uses. S&S Lime is now pioneering a product to reduce mercury emissions in coal-fired power plants utilizing waste products collected from pulp mills and similar industries. This modified activated-carbon product weighs 1/7th that of traditional sorbents and reduces mercury emissions with superior success--even when induct SO3 levels are up to 50 parts per million as a result of direct burning or injection prior to electrostatic precipitators.
The secret of the GLD product's success is the lightness of the material, since it is a wood-based powder and has a pore capacity to shelve both SO3 and mercury. Not only does the material flow easily, but injection is a simple process requiring less equipment, with little or no abrasive silica wearing on equipment. This modified waste material cannot be copied by mass production, leading to a "green on green" characterization. The availability in the U.S is well over 400 million pounds a year and is expected to remove three times the potential quantity of mercury than traditional coal-based sorbents.
S&S Lime has developed this product to a high degree and is now seeking participants interested in exploring the magnitude of mercury-emissions reduction, requiring only minor mechanical changes to plants. S&S Lime would like to give plant owners the chance to observe firsthand in their own plant GLD activated carbon's unique ability to reduce mercury content at a genuine real cost advantage.
