Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By 2010, Gansu will invest a total of $5.86 billion for the construction of energy projects in Jiuquan. A large energy complex integrated with wind, water, coal, solar, gas and nuclear types of produced energy, is emerging in Jiuquan, an important city in northwestern Chinas Gansu Province, Wu Xuesheng, deputy director of Jiuquan Development and Reform Commission and director of the Energy Development Office of Jiuquan City, said at a news conference on September 3, 2007.
Jiuquan is rich in wind and solar energy resources. Jiuquan has been listed as having one of the top five wind farms in China. In the past two years, six 50-100 megawatts (MW) wind farms in Jiuquan received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The total installed capacity of wind power reached 160 MW in Jiuquan, and four wind farms with a total installed capacity of 250 MW are currently under construction. The total installed capacity of wind power in Jiuquan will reach 410 MW by the end of 2007 and 1,000 MW by 2010.
Four hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 14.4 MW were put into operation in the past two years, and eight hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 50 MW are under construction. The total installed capacity of hydropower will reach 1,000 MW in Jiuquan by 2010.
In the aspect of coal power, the current installed capacity in Jiuquan is 180 MW, and construction of the $344 million Jiuquan 600 MW coal power project is expected to start this year. The total installed capacity of coal power will reach 2,800 MW in Jiuquan by 2010.
In addition, a 4,000 MW nuclear power project is expected to receive approval by the NDRC and start construction in 2010. A 20 MW natural gas power project and 10 MW photoelectric project are also expected to be put into operation one after another.
Upon the completion of the energy base, electricity produced from Jiuquan will be transmitted to the entire North China region, including Beijing and Tianjin, through a 750-kilovolt, ultra-high voltage-transmission line.
