Industrial Projects Under Construction in Texas Exceed $24 Billion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Texas leads the nation for industrial project construction activity in 2008. Industrial Info is tracking 163 projects totaling about $24.28 billion under construction in Texas. To qualify as "under construction" projects have to at least have started site-preparation activity and have yet to be commissioned. About 16% of these projects have recently begun site-preparation activities, and the remaining 84% fall between structural erection and final checkout/commissioning.

As can be seen from the chart, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry has the largest amount of industrial construction activity in Texas with $8.8 billion from 20 projects. These projects include large semiconductor manufacturing and R&D facilities being constructed by Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) (Sunnyvale, California), Samsung Semiconductors (San Jose, California) and Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) (Dallas, Texas). In Austin, the largest project under construction is into its second year of construction. Samsung Semiconductor is building a 1 million-square-foot semiconductor-manufacturing plant at a cost of $3.5 billion. Construction began in December 2006 and is expected to be completed by spring of 2009.

After the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, the Power Industry has the most activity with 19 projects totaling $5.5 billion, followed by Oil & Gas Terminals Industry with 19 projects totaling $2.6 billion and the Oil & Gas Transmission Industry with 19 projects totaling $1.3 billion.

In addition to these projects already under construction, industrial firms are evaluating more than 600 projects totaling more than $27 billion scheduled to begin construction between now and the end of the year.
