Rolls-Royce Turbines from Bolivian Plant to Undergo Maintenance in England

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 2 at Bolivia's Kenko thermal plant was taken offline on March 3, 2008, for general maintenance. Officials will perform mechanical repairs on the 18-megawatt (MW) turbine. Repairs are scheduled every 30,000 operating hours. These repairs are being held at Rolls Wood Group, which was established in 1990 as a joint venture between Rolls-Royce PLC (LSE:RYCEY) and Wood Group (LSE:WG). The Rolls-Royce Avon 1535 gas turbines were flown from Bolivia's El Alto City in La Paz to the Rolls-Royce repair shop in Aberdeen, England.

The same maintenance will be performed at Unit 1 in November 2008 and last four months. A Flexi Trent 110 digital control system upgrade, which had been planned for this year, has been postponed to 2009 because of financial reasons. The 36 MW thermal plant is operated by Compania Boliviana de Energia Electrica (La Paz, Bolivia), which has 10 hydroelectric plants in the Bolivian Zongo Valley, four in the Miguillas Valley and a small hydroelectric plant and Kenko thermoelectric plant in La Paz. All of them produce about 240.5 MW.
