Brazil's Angra III Nuclear Plant Awaiting Federal Government's Authorization to Relaunch

(Eletronuclear) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) receives authorization, which is about 30% complete. The company was expected to attend a hearing at the end of March in Angra dos Reis, Parati and Ubatuba to obtain legal permission to finish work on the building.

Civil construction on the Angra III nuclear power facility began in 1985 but was suspended in 1986 because of lack of funds and the lack of a clear policy on nuclear energy. The major part of the equipment is already on-site, and 30% of the infrastructure has been built. Eletronuclear has spent about $750 million on the plant so far, and an additional $1.84 billion will be needed to complete the facility.

The nuclear complex Central Nuclear Almirante Alvaro Alberto (Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is formed by Angra I, Angra II and Angra III and is strategically located near the three principal state cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.
