Borealis Adds LDPE Unit at Stenungsund Site in Sweden

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Borealis A B (Stenungsund, Sweden) has begun site preparations for a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) unit at its site in Stenungsund, Sweden. Borealis selected Tecnimont SpA (Milano, Italy) as the engineering and construction manager for the new unit estimated to cost $200 million. Industrial Info has been tracking this project since March 2006 when it was in an early planning stage. Borealis opted for Basell's Lupotech T technology for the process technology to produce approximately 350,000 metric tons per year. The unit is expected to be complete and operational in spring 2009.

Borealis completed a polyethylene unit addition in the fourth quarter of last year at the same site. Fluor Corporation's (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) Gliwice, Poland, office served as the engineering and construction contractor for the new unit, which produces approximately 80,000 metric tons a year of cross-linkable polyethylene (XLPE).

Borealis' Stenungsund site produces polyethylene products mainly for the cable, wire and piping industries. The cracker at the site can use a variety of feedstock, such as naphtha, ethane, propane and butane. Borealis is also the lone producer of polyethylene in all of Sweden. In 2007, Borealis recorded more than $835 million in net profit.
