Kansas City Power Prepares to Release RFPs to Add Environmental Controls at La Cygne Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Officials of Kansas City Power and Light (KCPL), a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated (NYSE:GXP) (Kansas City, Missouri), said in April that they are preparing the specification for the release a request for proposal (RFP) to build a 700-foot, single dual-flue stack for both of the units at its 1,578-megawatt (MW) coal-fired La Cygne power station. The RFP would also call for the demolition of the existing single stacks that are attached to the facilities two units. KCPL is hoping to have the RFP ready for release in approximately 60 to 90 days. The company hopes to begin construction as soon as a contractor is selected, or at least by year's end.

The installation of the new stack is the first phase in the company's plans for upgrading the station's environmental controls. After construction begins, KCPL will start to prepare the release of the RFPs for the construction and installation of environmental equipment to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter by installing a wet flue gas desulfurization unit and baghouse on each unit, as well as a selective catalytic reduction system on Unit 2.

The La Cygne power station became operational in 1973, consisting of two units that have Siemens steam turbines powered by Babcock & Wilcox coal-fired boilers outfitted with existing environmental controls. Site preparation for the new environmental controls additions is expected to begin sometime next year, with mechanical construction in the first part of 2010. Construction is expected to be completed around the second quarter of 2012. Each unit will cost $130 million.
