Joint Venture Nearing Completion of Natural Gas Storage Project in Louisiana

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Liberty Gas Storage LLC is nearing completion of a natural-gas-storage cavern in Louisiana's Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes. Liberty Gas is a partnership between Sempra Pipelines & Storage (75%), a Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California) company, and ProLiance Energy (25%) (Indianapolis, Indiana).

Liberty Gas began the construction process of de-brining two underground salt caverns to store natural gas in mid-2006. Once operational in the second quarter of 2008, the two caverns will have a working gas capacity of 17 billion cubic feet (Bcf). Liberty Gas is installing 24,000 horsepower of compression at the on-site compressor station. The compression will be supplied through four Caterpillar 6,000-horsepower, natural-gas-driven compressor units. The compression will allow for maximum injection rates of 500 million cubic feet per (MMCF/d) day and maximum withdrawal rates of 1 Bcf/d.

Liberty Gas has employed the services of TKE Engineering & Design (Houston, Texas) and Willbros Group Incorporated (NYSE:WG) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) division Willbros-RPI for engineering and construction services, respectively.

The Liberty Gas facility will connect with six interstate pipelines through a 30-inch-diameter bi-directional pipeline. Liberty Gas will connect to the Cameron Interstate Pipeline (under construction), Transcontinental Pipeline, Texas Eastern, Tennessee Pipeline, Florida Gas Transmission and Trunkline pipeline systems.
