Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) is nearing the construction phase on a new natural gas treating unit at its Shute Creek, Wyoming, gas plant near La Barge. The new unit will test ExxonMobil's Controlled Freeze Zone (CFZ) technology to remove CO2 and H2O from a 14 million-cubic-foot-per-day natural gas stream. The $110 million CFZ unit is designed to make carbon capture and storage more affordable and could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ExxonMobil has awarded the E&C contract to the Denver office of URS Washington Division. The construction contract has been verbally awarded to an undisclosed firm and is awaiting final authorization from ExxonMobil. Construction is expected to begin in June of this year with a completion date targeted for late 2009. If the CFZ unit passes muster then several existing ExxonMobil-owned gas processing plants could be retrofitted with the technology and future gas plants could incorporate this technology into their initial design.
