Construction Begins on $254 Million Cardiovascular Research Institute for UCSF

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The University of California, San Francisco, held a formal groundbreaking on May 7, 2008, for its $254 million Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI). In addition to biomedical research laboratories, the building will also house an outpatient clinic, a collaborative strategy that will bring together research scientists and physicians.

Founded in 1958, the CVRI is dedicated to research into heart and vascular diseases. In the United States alone, these diseases are the cause of an estimated 1 million deaths annually. Currently, CVRI staffers are working from a number of locations. This will change, once the new building is ready for occupancy in 2011.

Designed by Detroit's SmithGroup, the facility will be constructed to silver-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Funded by a mixture of public and private funds, the project's general contractor is Rudolph & Sletton (Redwood City, California). The 232,000-square-foot building project is located on the school's Mission Bay research campus, which its first construction activity began in 1999

In addition to the CVRI project, UCSF has three other active life science projects in various stages of development, worth a total investment value of $553 million. These projects include the $119 Parnassus Institute for Regeneration Medicine, which will focus on stem cell research when it opens in 2010.
