Developers of coal generation have more than 2,400 MW of new generation planned. Two of the six coal units, about 1,230 MW, are currently under construction: the 934 MW Iatan 02 (Weston Bend, Missouri) by Kansas City Power and Light Company, a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated (NYSE:GXP) (Kansas City, Missouri), and the 306 MW Southwest Power Station (Springfield, Missouri) owned by City of Springfield Utilities. The other four units, which make up the other 1,200 MW, are still fairly early in development.

AmerenUE, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (St. Louis, Missouri), is looking to install a 1,600 MW nuclear unit at the Calloway Nuclear Power Station (Fulton, Missouri) utilizing AREVA NP (OTC:ARVCF) (Paris) evolutionary power reactor technology that can be built in 42 months and has a projected life of 60 years.

Renewable generation is where Missouri will excel with growth of 130%. Wind power generation developers are projecting to increase wind capacity by tenfold from the current capacity of 112 MW to more than 1,300 MW. Hydroelectric generation could grow 30% from about 1,090 MW to more than 1,400 MW. Landfill gas could grow from about 2 MW to 20 MW under the current plans.
