China Guodian Further Diversifies with New Fertilizer Plant in Historic Chifeng

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) has selected the historic city of Chifeng to construct a new fertilizer plant that will produce ammonia and urea from coal. Guodian will invest over $300 million to engineer, develop and construct the massive plant. The company is awaiting the approval for funding and then will move to select an engineering and construction contractor.

The plant will consist of two main units: ammonia and urea. The ammonia unit will produce 300,000 metric tons annually and the urea unit will produce 520,000 metric tons per year when both are operational in the first quarter of 2011. Construction is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.

Chifeng is located in Inner Mongolia (Nei Mongol) and contains many coal mines, serving as an excellent and efficient hub for any coal-based chemical plants. Guodian's fertilizer complex will be the first major coal-to-chemical project in Chifeng and will lead the charge for other companies and investors in the coal-rich region. The leaders of Chifeng predict that major investments will come to the city through power generation companies, coal mine developers and more coal-to-chemical projects. With all the coal being excavated and used, railroad expansions will also see an increase in the region.

Since its beginnings in 2002, China Guodian has focused on the power needs in China. As China Guodian grew its business to assist in the restructuring of China's power generation sector, eventually becoming one of the five largest power companies in China, it diversified its businesses to include coal, which is used to power the plants. And as its history has shown, Guodian once again diversifies itself to include coal-to-chemical plants. Guodian has approximately $1.5 billion of registered capital.
