Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Aranjuez thermal plant, owned and operated by Empresa Electrica Guaracachi S.A. (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), has recently added a 2-megawatt (MW) General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) JNS 616 internal combustion engine and is planning to add two more by July 2008. The three units, Aranjuez 13, 14 and 15, are planned to operate with natural gas.
Empresa Electrica bought seven GE JSN616 turbines that were manufactured in Scotland. Plant officials have assembled five of the turbines: four by the end of 2006 and one in February 2008. Final tests are being conducted on the remaining two.
The Aranjuez plant, in Bolivia's capital of Sucre, is equipped with five 3 MW internal combustion engines that have been operating for more than 30 years and a 24 MW GE combustion turbine (model PG 55371). This turbine is reaching 48,000 operating hours and will undergo a hot gas path inspection in August.
In January 2006, Rurelec PLC (London) acquired Guaracachi America Incorporated. Empresa Electrica, one of Bolivia's largest generation companies, operates three plants: Santa Cruz Guaracachi, Aranjuez and Karachipampa in Santa Cruz. All of Empresa Electrica's power capacity is gas fired, and many units use fuel oil to start up.
