Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Petrobras' (NYSE:PBR) (Rio de Janeiro) Landulpho Alves refinery in Bahia, Brazil, will construct three units to decrease the sulfur in gasoline produced at the refinery. New regulations from Brazil's National Petroleum Agency determine that refineries should produce gasoline containing no more than 50 parts per million of sulfur. The new processing units will also allow the refinery to increase the value of its export products. The undertaking will entail the construction of two gasoline hydrodesulfurization units, with capacities of 5,000 cubic meters per day and 3,000 cubic meters per day. These will be supported by a hydrogen generation unit that will have a capacity of 260,000 normal cubic meters per day. Construction began in January, and the units will begin operating in March 2010. The engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to a consortium formed between the Brazilian companies Alusa, Tome and Queiroz Galvao, all of which have headquarters in Sao Paulo.
Petrobras is also building a gas pipeline to supply natural gas to the refinery. The 14-inch pipeline will transfer 2.4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from a gas-distribution station in Sao Francisco do Conde to the Landulpho Alves Refinery.
