Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renewable energy is scarce in Ohio, which, with a total of 35,195 megawatts (MW) of generated power, has only about 180 MW, or 0.5%, of its energy generated from renewable sources. Ohio's small amount of renewable energy comes from four main sources: hydroelectric, landfill gas, wind and wood. About 66% of the state's power generation comes from coal. Oil- and gas-based power generation follows with about 27.5% of the total power, and the remaining 6% comes from nuclear power. Developers are proposing building windfarms that would generate about 3,300 MW of power when completed, raising renewable power from 0.5% to 9% of Ohio's total generation capacity.

Current wind power generation is small, with a facility near Bowling Green generating just over 7 MW. There is a plentiful supply of wind in the central and northern portions of the state, particularly along the coast of Lake Erie. The proposed windfarms vary in size from 15 MW to 800 MW.
