Chilean Firm Submits Environmental Studies for 500-Megawatt Talinay Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Chilean engineering firm Kas (Santiago, Chile) has presented an environmental impact study for a 500-megawatt (MW) windfarm, to be built in the Ovalle community in the Coquimbo region of Chile.

Eolica Talinay S.A. windfarm will be equipped with 243 Vestas (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark) wind turbines ranging from 2 MW to 3 MW of capacity each. The project will require an estimated $1 billion and will be connected to Chile's central SIC grid.

Construction is due to begin in the fourth quarter this year and finish at the end of 2011, according to Conama, the Chilean government's environmental department. The project developers state that the windfarm will displace 19 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from 2010 through 2024.

In the past few years, Vestas has increased its presence in Chile. In November, Chile's Energia Renovable del Biobio is due to begin construction of the 20-MW Hualpen windfarm, which will be located in Chile's Biobio region. The $26 million farm will be equipped with 10 2-MW aerogenerators, also manufactured by Vestas.

In addition, Endesa, a subsidiary of Enersis S.A. (NYSE:ENI) (Santiago, Chile), is awaiting approval for the Canela II complex, which will include 46 new wind turbines next to the existing Canela 18.15-MW wind park, inaugurated in December 2007. The initiative will add 69 MW of capacity and will use Vestas equipment. The Danish company supplied the eleven V82 wind turbines at the Canela I wind park. Additionally, Vestas is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the park for the first two years.
