EGL Italia Begins Operation of 760-Megawatt Gas-Fired Combined-Cycle Plant in Italy

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--EGL Italia (Genova, Italy), a subsidiary of Elektrizitaets-Gesellschaft Laufenburg AG (SWF:EGL) (Zurich, Switzerland), has completed construction and began commercial operation of a 760-megawatt (MW) gas-fired combined-cycle plant in Rizziconi, Reggio-Calabria province.

After 27 months of construction, the power plant was inaugurated on June 18. The plant consists of two 380-MW multi-shaft combined-cycle blocks equipped with Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) and Ansaldo (BIT:STS) (Genova, Italy) technologies.

Ansaldo provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services with a total investment of about $711.5 million. Ansaldo will also provide maintenance for the power station, which will be operated by Rizziconi Energia SpA, owned by EGL Italia.

The plant will raise EGL's operational capacity from 830 MW to 1,590 MW in Italy.
