Kia Supplier Begins Construction of New Plant in Georgia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Johnson Controls Incorporated (NYSE: JCI) (JCI) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), a major supplier to the automobile industry, has started construction of a $15 million automotive interior components manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia.

Site preparation has been completed and construction will begin next week on a 130,000-square-foot plant, located on 20 acres of land. The plant will produce seat systems and door panels for Kia vehicles manufactured at the new $1.2 billion Kia automotive assembly and manufacturing plant in West Point, which is expected to begin production in late 2009 and will produce roughly 300,000 vehicles per year at full production capacity. Overall completion is slated for late spring or early summer of 2009. Production is anticipated to begin by early fall of 2009. Approximately 310 people will be employed at the new plant at full capacity. JCI currently manufactures seat systems and interior components for Kia in Europe and Asia.

Gray Construction Company, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was selected to provide general construction services for the new plant. RJ Mechanical Incorporated (Birmingham, Alabama) was selected to provide mechanical services.

Johnson Controls Incorporated, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, manufactures car batteries and interior parts such as seating, instrument panels and electronics for passenger vehicles and HVAC systems for commercial buildings. Their major original equipment manufacturer customers include General Motors, Daimler, Chrysler, Ford and Kia. As of 2007, the company consisted of 140,000 employees.
