U.K. Ministers Urge for Increased Nuclear Power
GALWAY, IRELAND--August 11, 2009--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to a special report prepared by the U.K. government's international energy representative, the U.K. should be aiming to generate 35-40% of the country's future power from nuclear sources. Nuclear power generation is declining in the U.K., accounting for only 12.5% of electricity generated in 2008, compared to 25% during the 1990s. The report charts the U.K's increasing reliance on energy imports and advises the government to reverse this trend as soon as possible. According to different reports the U.K. will be importing 45-80% of its gas in the coming years. Wicks' report points out the cost benefits of nuclear power by showing that, while fuel costs in a gas-fired power plant account for 70% of the total running costs, uranium represents just 10% of the overall running costs of a nuclear plant.
