Wisconsin Prepares to Increase Renewable Energy Sources 145%

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Wisconsin currently has 957 megawatts (MW) of renewable generation, representing 5.4% of the state's 17,636 MW of generating capacity. To meet the upcoming mandate that 10% of Wisconsin's power come from renewable sources, utilities and private energy producers are partnering up for an addition of approximately 1,390 MW of new renewable generation. This will bring the state's renewable generating capacity to more than 2,340 MW.

Wisconsin's current renewable generation uses a wide range of fuels. The existing breakdown of renewable generation is 40.9% wind, 35.1% hydroelectric, 13.8% black liquor, 4.3% landfill gas, 2.9% waste, and 2.9% wood. More than 90% of the new renewable capacity will be wind power facilities, bringing Wisconsin's overall renewable generation breakdown to 1,695 MW of wind power, 378 MW of hydroelectric, 132 MW of black liquor, 50 MW of biomass, 42 MW of landfill gas, 28 MW from waste, 28 MW from wood and 15 MW from solar power.
