Turbine Replacements Scheduled for Chancy-Pougny Hydroelectric Power Plant in Switzerland

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 47.1-megawatt (MW) Chancy-Pougny Hydropower Plant, owned and operated by Societe des Forces Motrices du Chancy-Pougny SA (Geneva, Switzerland), is gearing up for the replacement of two of the facility's five turbine units in early 2011. The replacements are projected to take about four years, with completion estimated for 2014.

Currently, the hydropower plant is equipped with two 12-MW Kaplan turbines, which were manufactured by Andritz AG (WBAG:ANDR) (Vienna, Austria) and commissioned in 2008, and three 7.7-MW Francis turbines, manufactured by Agie Charmilles (Geneva) and commissioned in 1924.

The turbine replacement work will involve two of the three Francis units. The new turbines will be manufactured by Andritz and use Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) generators.

Demolition work is planned to start September 2010, taking about four months to complete. As soon as the site is prepared, civil engineering and concrete work will take place for approximately three months. The installation of equipment, expected to take place around April 2011, will take about 2 years, plant officials told Industrial Info.

The shareholders of Motrices du Chancy-Pougny SA are Services Industriels de Geneve (Geneva), which has a 72.2% stake in the company, and Compagnie Nationale de Rhône (Lyon, France), which holds the remaining 27.8%.
