Speciality Contracts Prepared For Minsk 2 Plant Overhaul

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Contracts for specialty subcontractors for starting and adjustment works at the Minsk 2 combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Belarus are set to be released.

The subcontractors will be brought in to help with the addition of two 25-megawatt (MW) gas-fired turbines and two 7.5-MW steam turbines, which will double the plant's power output. The turbines belong to the SGT-series from Siemens Energy (Erlangen, Germany). The construction of the new units will take place in a building adjacent to the existing plant, which is operating as a district heating power plant. The three existing steam boilers will be dismantled. China National Corporation for Overseas Economic Cooperation (CCOEC) (Beijing) is the general contractor. The plant is owned by national power company Belenergo (Minsk), and the project has been funded by a $46 million loan from China.

The design and estimate documentation for the Minsk CHP plant-2 upgrade project has already been approved, and the gas turbines and related equipment have been delivered. Installation and construction work is under way, and the first and second turbines are expected to be commissioned in 2010.

CCOEC is already involved with the larger project taking place at unit 5 of the Minsk plant, alongside North China Power Engineering Company Limited (NCPE) (Beijing), a subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consultancy Corporation (Beijing). Minsk 5 is getting a 399.6-MW gas-steam, single-shaft M701F unit running in combined-cycle mode from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (Tokyo, Japan). The new plant is expected to start operations in October 2011 and will significantly improve power stability in the region. Overall, Belarus has borrowed almost $390 million from China to modernise the Minsk plant.
