Steel Manufacturer Nucor Turns Profit, Plans Restart of Arizona Mill

SUGAR LAND--January 27, 2010--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After posting consecutive net losses for the first three quarters of 2009, steel manufacturer Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) recently announced net earnings of $58.9 million for the final quarter of the company's 2009 fiscal year. While obviously a move in the right direction, the earnings were down 44% from 4Q08's net earnings of $105.9 million. Net sales for the year were down 53% year over year, falling from $23.66 billion in 2008 to $11.19 billion in 2009. U.S. Steel Corporation's (NYSE:X) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) comparative year-end sales were virtually identical to those of Nucor, falling from $23.75 billion in 2008 to $11.04 billion in 2009.
