Domtar Reports Fourth-Quarter Profits in Midst of Pulp & Paper Industry Contraction

SUGAR LAND--February 5, 2010--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Despite prevailing market conditions that continue to force Pulp & Paper companies to curtail production and close mills across North America, Domtar Corporation (NYSE:UFS) (Montreal, Quebec) recorded net earnings of $124 million from sales of $1.4 billion for the fourth quarter of 2009. Domtar cited improved pricing, reduced inventories, and efforts to reduce working capital and fixed costs as contributing factors for the company's solid performance. Domtar's wood sector saw a 5% increase in lumber shipments compared to the third quarter; however, the sector results showed an $11 million loss.
