Fluor Corporation Awarded EPC Contract in Chile

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engineering and construction firm Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) was awarded a $1.3 billion engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract at Lumina Copper's Caserones project.

Caserones, located in Chile's northern region of Atacama, entails the construction of an open-pit mine, a 105,000-ton-per-day concentrator to annually produce 150,000 tons of copper concentrate and 3,500 tons of molibdenum, and a solvent extraction/electro-winning plant (SX/EW) to produce 30,000 tons of copper cathodes. With a total investment value of almost $2 billion, Minera Lumina Copper Chile started early engineering work last April. Construction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2013.

Caserones, formerly known as Regalito, is fully owned by Minera Lumina Copper Chile SA (Santiago, Chile), a subsidiary of Pan Pacific Copper Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan), which in turn is controlled by Nippon Mining & Metals Company Limited (Tokyo) and Mitsui Mining & Smelting Company (Tokyo). This is the first time Fluor will be working with Lumina Copper and will coordinate activities from its Santiago office. An estimated 5,000 jobs will be created during construction.
