Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., which includes the Carolinas, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia, is set to begin more than $4.5 billion of industrial projects this quarter. While the largest of these projects involves the Power Industry, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech and Pulp & Paper industries are also making significant contributions to industrial spending in the region.
Click on image at right for a breakdown of spending for third-quarter 2010 project starts in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. The region's largest single project, which is tentatively scheduled to kick off in September, is Progress Energy's 950-megawatt natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant near Goldsboro, North Carolina. Progress announced the closure of the nearby H.F. Lee coal-fired plant last year. By replacing the coal-fired units with natural gas, carbon dioxide emissions are expected to be reduced by 40% to 50%, accompanied by a 90% drop in nitrogen oxide emissions.
Slightly more than $1 billion in Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry projects are set to begin in the region during the quarter. Chief among these is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) laboratory addition for the Center for Biological Evaluation and Research (CBER) at the White Oak Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. The project will add approximately 500,000 square feet of LEED-certified building space to house research and administrative activities. KlingStubbins Architecture (Washington, D.C.) is the architect for the project, while Tishman Construction (Washington, D.C.) is acting as construction manager. The project is part of a larger iniative to consolidate many of the FDA's acronymed agencies, including the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the CBER, to a single campus.
About $560 million of Pulp & Paper Industry projects are planned to kick off in the Mid-Atlantic region in the third quarter. Clearwater Paper Corporation's grassroot tissue paper mill in Shelby, North Carolina, is scheduled to kick off in September, while another grassroot tissue paper mill, owned by First Quality Tissue LLC, plans to kick off construction in August in South Carolina.
