ConocoPhillips Studies Major Upgrades at Refinery in Pennsylvania

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) is studying major upgrades for the company's fluid catalytic cracker unit (FCCU) and alkylation unit at the 185,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery in Trainer, Pennsylvania.

The company is currently evaluating options to upgrade an existing 50,000-BBL/d FCCU to increase conversion capabilities by replacing the reactor and regenerator. Additionally, a gas plant downstream of the unit will be upgraded.

ConocoPhillips plans to modify the 12,000-BBL/d alkylation unit by utilizing the company's proprietary ReVap (Reduced Volatility Alkylation Process) to increase octane levels and produce low-sulfur alkylates for the production of clean fuels. The work is planned to begin field construction in early 2014.

ConocoPhillips is the second-largest refiner in the U.S. and has a crude oil capacity of about 2 million BBL/d at 12 refineries:

• West Coast: 139,000-BBL/d Los Angeles refinery, 120,000-BBL/d San Francisco refinery, 96,000-BBL/d Ferndale refinery and the 58,000-BBL/d Billings refinery
• Central region: 306,000-BBL/d Wood River refinery, 187,000-BBL/d Ponca City refinery and the 146,000-BBL/d Borger refinery
• Gulf Coast: 247,000-BBL/d Alliance refinery, 247,000-BBL/d Sweeny refinery and the 239,000-BBL/d Lake Charles refinery
• East Coast: 238,000-BBL/d Bayway refinery and the 185,000-BBL/d Trainer refinery

Overseas, the company has two refineries in Germany, one in the United Kingdom, one in Ireland and one in Melaka.
