Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cennergi, the joint venture energy company formed by Exxaro Resources (OTC:EXXAY) (Pretoria, South Africa) and Tata Power Company Limited (BSE:500400) (Mumbai, India) announced in Johannesburg last week plans to acquire and develop 16,000 megawatts (MW) of generation projects in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana by 2025. There will be an initial focus on renewables in the project pipeline as the company develops its strategy of creating a balanced portfolio of generation assets.
For related information see March 9, 2012, article - Tata Power, South Africa's Exxaro Create Cennergi Generation Development Company.
Tata's local South African investment arm, Khopoli Investments, will study, develop, own, operate, maintain, acquire and manage private electricity generation projects in the three countries.
Thomas Garner, the CEO of Cennergi, said that the company has a target of 16,000 MW of installed capacity, with 15% coal-fired projects in the mix and 40% gas-fired. He said the aim is for emissions from company projects to be 0.3 to 0.5 tons of CO2 per MW, compared to the regional figure of 1 ton per MW or higher.
The company has already submitted solar and wind project bids for the second bidding round under South Africa's renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) procurement program, which closed March 5. It has proposed 40 MW of solar projects and three wind projects with a total capacity of 274 MW. The government program is targeting a total of 3,725 MW of renewable capacity in the short and medium terms.
Cennergi has also submitted information on hydroelectric projects in response to the government's request for information on IPP base load cogeneration projects that could be in operation by 2019. These projects are sited in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.
For related information, see April 6, 2012, article - Fast-Track Projects Could Give South Africa 61,300 Megawatts by 2019.
Cennergi is working toward becoming a partner with the state-owned national power utility Eskom to actively contribute toward solving South Africa's energy challenges.
Tata Power and Exxaro have both excluded certain projects in their existing portfolios from the new joint venture's operations. Exxaro, in its own right, has proposed a 1,200-MW power plant at the group's greenfield Thabametsi coal mine, adjacent to its major Grootegeluk mine in the Waterberg region of Limpopo province. Exxaro has had talks with Eskom about using the utility's transmission network to supply customers.
