CIASA Performs Engineering and Procurement for Biomass Project at Honduras Sugar Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sugar manufacturer Compania Azucarera Hondurena SA (Cortes, Honduras) has awarded an engineering and procurement contract to Guatemalan company CIASA (Guatemala City) to develop a biomass project.

According to plant officials, the project´s total investment cost is estimated to be $1 million per installed megawatt (MW). The project involves the installation of a biomass-fired boiler along with a 31-MW steam turbine. Equipment installation is expected to kick off in mid-2013. The facility is scheduled to be operational by the 2014 crushing season. The new unit will provide energy for the industrial process, and the excess power will be sold to the public grid. Once the project is completed, the plant powerhouse capacity will be 65 MW.

The San Pedro Sula sugar plant is located in the Honduran state of Cortes. Its current sugarcane crushing capacity is 12,000 tonnes per year, with an annual sugar production of 1,550 tonnes. The powerhouse currently generates 34 MW of renewable energy.
