Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Finding alternative ways to generate electricity has become an issue in the U.S. These alternative methods are a way to reduce oil and gas dependency as the population and electrical demand increase. The consumption of these natural resources requires immediate consideration and re-evaluation of products that will provide a continuous supply of electrical energy, and a fuel source that will elevate the constraints of oil and gas consumption, whether acquired domestically or abroad.

The Gettysburg Energy and Nutrient Recovery Facility, which is owned by EnergyWorks BioPower (York Springs, Pennsylvania), is one such facility that has found clever ways of generating electricity. The facility will collect the chicken litter from a nearby egg-processing plant and use it as a fuel to operate a Victory Boiler to produce steam to operate an Elliott steam turbine, which will provide 3.24 megawatts of renewable energy to the local grid. The facility is under construction, but is expected to become commercial during the first quarter of 2013.

The facility is expected to provide approximately 3,000 homes with renewable energy. The nearby Hillandale farm houses more than 3.5 million chickens, which produce 240 tons of manure per day. The facility also will reduce the environmental impact in terms of the amount of waste runoff into lakes, streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay after heavy rains. As technology advances in this type of fuel source and other areas of research, alternative fuel sources will provide new directions to explore and different possibilities for the future.
