First Unit of Hainan Hongling Hydropower Station to Begin Operations in Late 2013

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The construction of Hainan Hongling Water Resources Project Construction Company's (Qiongzhong, Hainan) Hongling Hydropower Station is progressing smoothly. So far, the project has completed the placement of 658,800 cubic meters of concrete, accounting for 59.4% of the total designed work quantity. The first unit of the project is expected to begin operations at the end of 2013, according to an announcement from the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Hainan Province on March 1, 2013.

The Hongling Hydropower Station, located in the midtream of Dingbian River, a tributary of Wanquan River, in Zhongping Town of Qiongzhong Li & Miao Minorities Autonomous County in the Hainan province, is to be furnished with two 21.3-megawatt (MW) hydraulic-turbine generating units with a designed annual output of 99 million kilowatt-hours. As a key project listed in the 11th Five-Year (2006-10) Plan for Hainan, the project is being built mainly for water supply and irrigation, together with comprehensive benefits in flood control and power generation.

With a total investment of about $380 million, the project is jointly invested by China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) and Hainan Development Holdings Group Company (Haikou, Hainan). HydroChina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation (Changsha, Hunan) and Pearl River Planning, Survey and Design Company are jointly responsible for the design and engineering of the project. China Gezhouba Group No.1 Engineering Company (Yichang, Hubei) is serving as the main construction contractor. Construction of the project kicked off on February 28, 2011.

2013 will be a critical year for the construction of the main works for the project. According to the schedule, reservoir cleaning under 168-meter elevation, together with the environmental evaluation prior to reservoir impounding, will be completed by May 31, 2013. Partial acceptance of the completed civil works prior to initial impounding will be performed in the third quarter 2013. Reservoir impounding is expected to kick off in November 2013. All construction for the earth dam will be completed in December 2013, and the first unit will be operational by the end of that month.

As reported, upon completion, the project will be able to supply 94 million cubic meters of water and irrigate 91,500 hectares of farmland in Tunchang, Wenchang, Qionghai, Ding'an and Haikou 5 cities and counties in the Hainan province.
