North Carolina State Goes to the Dogs, Cats, and Animals of All Kinds as It Opens $36 Million Veterinary Research Center

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The new College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) research building has opened at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, North Carolina). Designed by Flad and Associates (Raleigh, North Carolina), the four-story CVM facility will provide both basic and clinical research in veterinary medicine. The 100,000 square-foot building features 33 laboratories and two Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) infectious disease research labs, along with office and conference space.

Bovis Lend Lease, also out of Raleigh, served as the $36 million project's construction manager. Researchers in the new building will work in a variety of fields, including genomic sciences, gene therapy, vaccine development, creation of diagnostic tests, new cancer immuno-therapy, and genetic research to prevent inherited and acquired diseases in livestock and companion animals. As first reported by Industrialinfo.com in April of 2002 and currently archived in Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online, construction of the project began in November 2002 and was completed in early 2005.

The building is the first built for North Carolina State's planned Centennial Biomedical Campus (CBC). The 20-year CBC master plan calls for the development of up to 25 buildings to house additional laboratories, offices, and animal care space - eventually totaling over one million square feet of space. The CBC was created to attract industry and government researchers, entrepreneurs, clinical trial companies, and collaborators from other universities, who will work with college faculty and students.
