Indianapolis Power & Light Gears Up to Install Flue Gas Desulfurization Scrubber

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) (Indianapolis, Indiana), a subsidiary of AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), is preparing to install a Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubber at their Harding Street Power Station.

The company contracted Advatech LLC, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Tokyo, Japan) and URS Corporation (NYSE:URS)(San Francisco, California), to install a wet scrubber for Harding Street Unit# 7. The project will involve constructing a scrubber to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from an ALSTOM coal tangential-fired dry bottom 3.145 million ponders per hour boiler. Preliminary site work and some equipment relocations have started. Mechanical construction kick off is slated to begin during the spring of 2006 and project completion, during an outage to perform equipment tie-ins, is expected to occur prior to the summer of 2007. The 471-megawatt Unit# 7 commenced commercial operation in 1973.

The Harding Street Station is home to four additional steam Units# 3-6, with a combined capacity of 302-megawatts, combustion turbine generators 1-6, totaling 415-megawatts, and a 3-megawatt internal combustion generator. Installations of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) on Unit# 7 and Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) were recently completed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) from the plant.
