As mentioned above, the transportation and distribution industries are key to the increases in spending in recent years. This will continue into the future as 72% of future spending activity within these states currently resides within the port industry, the warehousing & distribution industry and the light & commuter rail industry. Currently, there are over $1.9 billion worth of active capital projects in various ports in North and South Carolina. In addition, the warehousing & distribution industry is contributing $500 million to the mix and the light & commuter rail industry another $419 million.

Chief among the projects within these industries is the proposed $600 million grassroot International port in North Carolina, the proposed $600 million Naval Yard container terminal addition in South Carolina, the proposed $450 million Jasper County grassroot marine container terminal in South Carolina, the proposed $300 million grasroot Mid-Atlantic parcel sorting hub in North Carolina, and the proposed $212 million grasroot Southeast corridor light rail project in North Carolina.

Within these two states, several counties are reaping the rewards of the upswing in capital and maintenance planning. Chief among these counties is Charleston County, South Carolina, which is currently hosting $939 million in proposed project work. In addition, Brunswick County, North Carolina is holding its own with $600 million worth of proposed future project work, and counties such as Jasper County, South Carolina with $450 million in project work and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina with $425 million in project work are showing some significant future spending promise.

Spending is on the rise in the Carolina’s after years of modest spending numbers. Companies are recognizing the benefits of choosing North and South Carolina to play host to their plants and the companies already within the states are finding benefits in expanding. The infrastructure work, such as port, distribution and rail projects, is an anticipated benefit of the increased interest in these states. When these projects are completed in a few years, do not be surprised to see more heavy investment in the states by companies within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry as the benefits of locating here will be more and more readily apparent as the years go by.
