Brazilian Company Usiminas has resumed operating the Blast Furnace 1 at the Ipatinga Plant. The equipment has a production capacity of about 2,000 tons of pig iron per day. Blast Furnace 1 and Melt Shop 1 were shuttered in April due to a falloff in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Blast Furnace 2, also with a capacity of 600 million tons per year, remains shuttered. Blast Furnace 3, which has the capacity to produce 2.2 million tons per year, is still operating.
