South Africa's power sector is set for a paradigm shift in the country's energy mix and increased participation by the private sector, according to the latest draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2018 update for the period up until 2030. Historically, power generation in South Africa has been dominated by coal, but the rise of renewable-energy resources--such as solar and wind power--has prompted widespread calls for changes to the country's energy mix. If the IRP 2018 electricity roadmap is successfully implemented, South Africa will transition away from coal to renewables. By 2030, natural gas, wind and solar photovoltaic could comprise 16%, 15% and 10%, respectively, of the country's power mix.br>
