Argentinas Generación Mediterránea Purchases Two Pratt & Whitney Gas Turbines

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Argentinas generating company Generación Mediterránea S.A., a subsidiary of one of the major Argentine energy traders, Albanesi, recently purchased two natural gas turbines from Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (East Hartford, Connecticut), a United Technologies company (NYSE:UTX ), to be installed at its Modesto Maranzana thermal plant.
The acquisition is part of the $100 million expansion and combined cycle conversion project devoted to increasing the plants capacity. The two 60-megawatt (MW), FT8 SWIFTPAC units will be installed in Río Cuarto, Cordoba, Argentinas second largest city. Generación Mediterránea expects to run the two units at base load beginning in July 2008 in a simple cycle mode and in 2010 in a combined cycle mode. In addition, the plant will be supported by under a five-year comprehensive service contract with Pratt & Whitney Power Systems.
Currently, the plant is equipped with four General Electric turbines, two of them are combustion turbines and the remaining two are steam turbines, producing a total of 70 MW. Modesto Maranzana Thermal Plant was built in 1995 by the Argentine food company Arcor. Enron bought it in 2001.
