Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plutonic Power Corporation (TSX:PCC) (Vancouver, British Columbia) is developing about 40 small hydroelectric power projects that could add nearly 1,900 megawatts (MW) to British Columbia's grid for about $5 billion to $6 billion. The province-owned British Columbia Hydro & Power Authority (Vancouver) has proposed four projects that would add about 2,400 MW for an estimated $7.5 billion.
Plutonic Power has begun construction on the East Toba/Montrose Creek project, a two-site project for a total of 196 MW, or about 10%, of what the company is proposing. Plutonic Power began construction on the projects in July 2007. The company plans to build 1,400 MW by 2016 and the remaining 500 MW afterward.
British Columbia Hydro & Power plans to install three 500-MW units at two hydroelectric stations for about $310 million per unit. Units 5 and 6 will be added to the Mica Creek Hydro Station in 2014 and 2016, respectively. A sixth 500-MW unit is being considered for the Revelstoke Hydro Station where the company is currently installing the 500-MW Revelstoke Unit 5, which is expected to be complete in 2010. The 900-MW Site C Hydro Station near Fort Saint John, British Columbia, is expected to be completed in 2019. The project includes three 300-MW units for a total cost of $6.6. billion.
Peter Kiewit Sons' Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) is handling installations for British Columbia Hydro & Power and construction of the East Toba/Montrose Creek project.
