Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North China Power Engineering Company Limited (NCPE) (Beijing), which is a regional subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consultancy Corporation (CPECC) (Beijing), signed a contract for a boiler-turbine-generator (BTG) package, as well as engineering and construction management, with Shanxi Shentou Power Generation Company Limited (Shuozhou, Shanxi), which is a subsidiary of China Power International Development Limited (HK:2380) (Hong Kong), for Shentou No.1 Power Plant's 1,200-megawatt (MW) expansion project in Beijing on March 23, 2010. China Power Chairwoman Li Xiaolin, General Manager Liu Guangchi and NCPE Chairman Liu Chao'an, among other leaders and representatives, attended the signing ceremony, CPECC announced on March 26, 2010.
Shentou No.1 is a pithead power plant in the eastern Pinglu District, Shuozhou City, in China's Shanxi province. With a total installed capacity of 1,300 MW, including two 50-MW units that are currently shut down and six 200-MW units, it is the first large-scale, coal-fired power plant with capacity of more than 1,000 MW in Shanxi province. Construction on the plant kicked off in 1973, and the last unit was commissioned in December 1987.
The expansion project will be built with two 600-MW, supercritical, coal-fired units that will replace smaller units. The project is to be solely invested by China Power, and the total investment will be about $660 million. As reported, the project will use 3-towers-in-1 indirect air-cooling technology, which integrates the traditional stack, absorbing tower and air-cooling tower into a single unit. The facility will have an electrostatic precipitator and bag-combined dust remover and a side bunker arrangement. Application of the 3-towers-in-1 technology is not only a technical innovation, but an important milestone in the engineering and construction in the electric power sector.
According to the schedule, construction of the project is expected to begin on July 15, 2010, and the first unit and the second unit are expected to begin operations in June and August 2012, respectively.
