Chile's Pilmaiquen SA to Add 160 Megawatts of Hydropower Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Empresa Electrica Pilmaiquen SA (Santiago, Chile), is advancing with hydropower projects in Los Rios and Los Lagos (XIV and X) regions of Chile. The projects have a combined generating capacity of 160 megawatts (MW).

The Los Lagos Hydropower Station, with a capacity of 53 MW, and the Osorno Hydropower Station, with 58.2 MW of generating capacity, have obtained the required permits, and are expected to begin construction early next year. The facilities are scheduled to begin operations in 2014. Requests for quotations (RFQs) and bidding are expected to be released by the end of this year.

Pilmaiquen is developing the 50-MW Rucatayo Hydropower Station, which is about 34 kilometers east of Osorno. The company has completed about two-thirds of the construction. Completion is expected in the first quarter of 2012.

Chile currently has 5,294 MW of hydropower projects in the planning phase and 1,027 MW of hydro capacity in engineering stage. Some of the most important and largest projects in the planning phase are:

• the 680-MW Baker Hydropower Station
• the 360-MW Baker II Hydropower Station
• the 460-MW Pascua Hydropower Station
• the 500-MW Pascua II Hydropower Station
• the 770-MW and Pascua II.1 Hydropower Station

These projects belong to Hydroaysen SA, a joint venture of Colbun SA (SCL:Colbun) (Santiago) and Endesa Chile (Santiago). The projects have combined total investment value of approximately $7 billion and will be constructed in different phases, beginning in 2014.
