Indonesia's 'Iconic Island' Initiative Boosts 25% Renewable Energy Push

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Asian Development Bank's (ADB) $1 million grant to the Indonesian island of Sumba is a boon to the country's goal of providing 25% of its power needs from renewable energy--while still exporting coal for power generation.

The "Iconic Island" initiative, started by international development and rights organization Hivos (The Hague, Netherlands), aims to make the tiny island fully self-sufficient via renewables. Currently, two small grids powered by diesel generators provide a sporadic supply to 25% of the population.

Indonesia is pushing contractors to develop renewables by determining ceiling prices for each renewable energy source.

Minister of Energy Jero Wacik said that Indonesia has a great potential to develop 30,000 megawatts of geothermal energy as old oil fields, lacking foreign investment, decrease in output.
