Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Final commissioning has taken place at the Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 (FM1) power project in northern England.
The FM1 plant, located on land next to Ferrybridge "C" coal-fired power station, has been under construction for more than three years by Multifuel Energy Limited (MEL), a 50:50 joint venture owned by Scottish utility SSE plc (Perth, Scotland) and U.S.-based waste-to-energy firm (WTE) Wheelabrator Technologies Incorporated (Hampton, New Hampshire). It has a total generating capacity of 68 megawatts (MW) and can supply enough electricity to power about 160,000 homes.
The plant was constructed by main contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) (Zurich, Switzerland), formerly known as Von Roll Inova, and is the company's fifth U.K. project. It burns a mix of waste-derived fuels from various sources, including municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste, and waste wood. FM1 can process up to 42 tonnes of waste per hour in each of the two process lines. HZI has handed over full responsibility of the complex to Multifuel Energy.

Tom Maillet, director of engineering and operations for Multifuel Energy Limited, said: "The commencement of commercial operations at the Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 project is a great achievement for everyone who has been involved, and I would like to thank each and every team member for their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank HZI for delivering such a high quality plant. We are excited to reach this milestone, and are now looking forward to concentrating on operating safely, successfully and efficiently."
FM1, which cost about £350 million ($541 million) to develop, can process approximately 500,000 tonnes of waste annually. MEL has also applied to build another plant, FM2, adjacent to FM1. It will have a planned generating capacity of 90 MW and alongside FM1 will be capable of dealing with more than 1 million tonnes of waste a year.
