Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Panda Power Funds (Dallas, Texas), a power development and management firm, is becoming a bigger player in the U.S natural gas market. This year alone, Panda has brought more than 1,600 megawatts (MW) of energy produced by natural gas to the national grid. The company has been able to capitalize on environmental regulations that have taken coal-powered facilities out of service.
Panda completed two facilities in Pennsylvania earlier this year, the Panda Liberty and Panda Patriot, each of which has a capacity of 829 MW. Both projects featured high-efficiency Siemens gas turbines in a 2-to-1, combined-cycle configuration.
Panda has more than 1,900 MW under construction in Virginia and Pennsylvania. The 778-MW Panda Stonewall and 1,124-MW Panda Hummel projects are located in Leesburg, Virginia, and Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania, respectively; both are expected to be online in first-quarter 2018.
The U.S. Energy Information forecasts roughly 25% of the nation's coal fleet will be retired by 2040. The Panda Hummel project is a perfect example of this trend: It is designed to convert a 60-year-old retired coal facility into a natural gas power plant.
